SPOTLIGHT:
I Garagisti di Sorgono 2021 Monica di Sardegna ‘Murru’ Sardegna
Close your eyes, take a sip, where are you? Chianti? Barbaresco? Nope, you are in the hills of Mandrolisai in central Sardinia! Not known for subtlety, this gem is an aromatic, medium-bodied red showing wild peppercorn and taunt red cherries in the glass. From a collaborative effort of 4 friends who seek to emulate the ‘garage wines’ of Bordeaux.
Vermouth
Vermouth is the sommeliers secret weapon and the sheer range of what I call "sipping Vermouth" is incredible. Long gone are the days of our parents dusty bottles of Dolin. Today, Vermouth production in Italy and around the world is varied and complex. Generally speaking, 3 styles exist: Extra Dry, or the driest Vermouth, always white and with the lowest level of sweetness. Bianco, a white with another level of sweetness, good on a warm day with ice. And, Red Vermouth, made with red grapes it can range from light to heavy, sweet, spicy, herbal... you name it. Here is a selection of sipping Vermouth I recommend. All are made in small production facilities, showcasing foraged botanicals and local wine grapes.
